Despite building a stellar reputation as a favorite fast food option for many, Chipotle restaurants are struggling with a serious health crisis due to an outbreak of E. coli. The recent outbreak has resulted in serious skepticism about the company’s practices and, more importantly, closings of Chipotle locations across the nation.

The chain’s health crisis began with the closing of 43 Chipotle restaurants last month in Washington and Oregon. Additionally, 80 students at Boston College became ill due to a Norovirus while eating at a local Chipotle. Boston health officials cited the restaurant in question for two health violations; improper handling of poultry and the presence of a sick employee.

In response to the outbreak of the current health crisis, Chipotle has pledged to implement stricter sanitization practices, hired food safety consultants, and to more stringently test ingredients.
